Did you know the adult skeleton has 206 bones? Check out Advanced Sports Chiropractic and Massage’s top 6 fascinating bone facts!
1. BONES ARE LIVING TISSUE
Bones have their own cells, which are responsible for bone maintenance, production, and modeling. They also have their own blood vessels.
2. EXTRA RIB: IT’S RARE, BUT IT HAPPENS
Most people have 12 ribs, but one percent of the population is born with an extra. Called a cervical rib, this extra bone can cause neck pain.
3. BABIES HAVE MORE BONES
Babies have about 300 bones, compared with the 206 in adults. The reason for this difference is that bones fuse together as we get older.
4. SMALLEST BONE: THE STAPES
Located in the middle ear, the stapes is one of three tiny bones collectively called the ossicles.
5. STRONGEST BONE: THE FEMUR
The femur is considered the strongest bone in the human body. It’s also the longest bone. Because it’s so strong, it takes a lot of force to cause injury.
6. THE HANDS AND FEET HAVE MOST BONES
More than half the bones in the human body (106 of them!) are located in the hands and feet.
