What is that popping sound? And other questions about chiropractic care

  • April 8, 2026

Have you ever wondered what exactly happens when you hear that loud "POP" during a chiropractic adjustment? Is it your bones rubbing together? Is it gas leaving your joints? Is it safe?

It’s one of the most common questions a chiropractor gets. Today, we’re answering questions about joint popping and other topics people often hesitate to discuss with their chiropractor or in sports recovery.

The Big One: “What is that popping sound?”

Let’s solve this mystery first: that satisfying (or slightly disconcerting) sound is not your bones cracking or rubbing together.

It’s actually a process called cavitation. Here’s the science: Our joints are surrounded by a capsule filled with synovial fluid, which acts as a lubricant. Within this fluid are dissolved gases like oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. When a chiropractor applies a quick, controlled movement to a joint, it causes a rapid, temporary separation of the joint surfaces.

This sudden increase in volume lowers the pressure within the joint capsule. Just like opening a soda can, this pressure drop allows the dissolved gases to rapidly form tiny bubbles. The "pop" is the sound of those bubbles forming and collapsing. It’s completely normal and, in a clinical setting, doesn’t signify any injury.

"If I start going, do I have to go forever?"

This is a huge concern for many people. You might have heard a friend say, "Once you go to a chiropractor, you can never stop."

The short answer: No. The goal of evidence-based chiropractic care is to get you out of pain and back to your life. That said, every person's body and lifestyle is different, and part of what we do is help you understand what kind of ongoing care, if any, makes sense for you moving forward. A proactive approach to your health often looks different than simply waiting until something hurts again.

Some people choose to come in for maintenance or wellness visits because they feel better when they do, similarly to how you might get a regular massage or oil change for your car.  A reputable practitioner will work with you to determine what level of care best supports your long-term goals — never pressuring you, but also never leaving you to guess.

"Can I train around an injury?"

Yes! In fact, the modern approach to recovery has shifted away from "total rest" (which can lead to muscle loss and stiffness) toward relative rest.

Instead of stopping all activity, we focus on what you can do safely. This involves:

  • Modifying Movements: Finding exercises that work around the injured area. For example, if you have a "tweaked" shoulder, we might swap overhead presses for floor presses.
  • Contralateral Training: Fun fact - Training your uninjured limb can actually help prevent muscle loss in the injured one through a neurological process called "cross-education."
  • Graded Exposure: This is the process of slowly reintroducing stress to the injured area.

This approach keeps your heart rate up, your spirits high, and your uninjured muscles strong while the injured area heals. Navigating it well takes guidance; if you're ever unsure whether what you're doing is helping or hindering your recovery, that's exactly when checking in with a provider can keep you headed in the right direction.

"Is it bad that I crack my own neck/back?"

While the occasional self-pop isn't necessarily dangerous, there's a reason it usually feels like you need to do it again twenty minutes later.

When you crack your own back, you are typically hitting the hypermobile joints. The joints that are actually restricted (the ones causing the tension in the first place) stay stuck. A chiropractor can use specific angles to target only the restricted segments.

If you feel a constant urge to self-adjust, it might be a sign that a nearby segment isn't moving correctly, and your body is trying to compensate.
