As a huge fan of outdoor adventures, I’ve had a blast exploring Whatcom County and uncovering some seriously fun locations for water sports. Whether you’re into waterskiing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, or paddleboarding, Bellingham and the surrounding areas provide an incredible selection of places to indulge in your favorite aquatic activities.
Below, I’ll highlight some of my favorite destinations.
Lake Whatcom
Nestled amidst lush greenery, I consider Lake Whatcom a true gem. Its pristine waters beckon kayakers and paddleboarders to embark on serene journeys, surrounded by majestic mountains. For those seeking an adrenaline rush, water skiing and wakeboarding are popular choices. The breathtaking scenery makes every moment unforgettable. You can rent stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, canoes, and paddleboats through Bloedel Boat Rentals. For those who’d like a longer adventure, lodge and cabin rentals are available, with discounted rates for Whatcom County residents.

Lake Samish
Picture rolling hills overlooking a tranquil lake. That’s Lake Samish for you. Grab your canoe, pedalboat, or rowboat (or rent one at Samish Park) and navigate through the peaceful waters, where time seems to stand still. Fishing enthusiasts will get their fill at the fishing dock, where trout and bass swim by. I’ve spent many hours lost in the beauty of this hidden paradise, and it never fails to rejuvenate my spirit.
Bellingham Bay
As an outdoor sports enthusiast, I’m drawn to the mesmerizing allure of the ocean. Bellingham Bay offers a playground of endless possibilities. Sailing across its expansive waters must be exhilarating, with the wind guiding the vessel as seagulls soar above. Kayaking and paddleboarding are fantastic ways to explore its long coastline, while the brave sometimes try their hand at windsurfing when conditions are right. The Community Boating Center rents paddle boards, keelboats, and dinghies, in addition to kayaks, paddleboats, and rowboats.
Birch Bay
For a coastal escape like no other, Birch Bay is a must-visit. Its shallow waters make it an ideal destination for swimming, paddle boarding, and enjoying the tide pools. As the sun paints the sky with hues of gold, you can get immersed in the joy of swimming along the water’s edge. Renting a boat allows you to venture further, embracing the freedom of the open sea. Abundant in Dungeness crab, Birch Bay is also a coveted spot for hard-shell clamming during the summer.
Lake Padden
Tucked in the heart of nature, Lake Padden offers plenty of adventure for watersports enthusiasts. There’s a fishing dock to catch trout, kokanee, and large-mouth bass and a boat launch (for non-motorized or electric boats only). Kayaking or canoeing on its calm surface creates a perfect harmony with the surrounding woodland. You can rent single kayaks, tandem kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards or bring your own. Taking a leisurely stroll along the scenic trail that encircles the lake allows you to appreciate the beauty from a different perspective.
Lummi Island
For a more adventurous escapade into Whatcom County’s water sport locations, a short ferry ride to Lummi Island is a thrill. Those more experienced in kayaking even kayak directly to the island from a place like Wildcat Cove in Larrabee State Park. This secluded island presents an idyllic setting for exploring hidden coves along its rugged coastline. Kayaking, collecting seashells, and going crabbing are just a few of the activities that make every visit unforgettable. The rough beauty of Lummi Island offers a taste of pure paradise.
As an outdoor enthusiast, these remarkable locations have provided me with countless exhilarating moments. Remember to respect nature, follow safety guidelines, take care of your physical health, and leave no trace as you embark on your own watersports adventures in Whatcom County. Get ready to create memories that will last a lifetime!
