It runs from the lower back through the hip and buttock and down the back of each leg. When something presses on or irritates the nerve, the result can be: - Sharp, burning or electric pain that shoots from the low back or buttock into the leg - Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot - Weakness in the leg or foot - Pain that gets worse when you sit for a long time, cough or sneeze Sciatica usually affects one side of the body. It's a symptom of an underlying problem, so effective care starts with finding the cause. ## What Causes Sciatica? The most common causes include: - **Herniated or bulging discs:** the soft center of a spinal disc pushes outward and puts pressure on a nerve root.
