We're excited to introduce Monica Nizamuldin, LMT, the newest addition to the team at Advanced Sports Chiropractic and Massage.

Monica came to massage therapy by way of the beauty and aesthetics industry, where she first discovered lymphatic drainage and the difference it could make for clients. That discovery led her to pursue licensure, and she's since built a practice that blends two very different skill sets: a relaxing, flowing Swedish and spa-style massage, and a highly specialized lymphatic drainage technique that calls for an entirely different touch.

We sat down with Monica to talk about her path into the field, what she's learned along the way, and what you can expect from a session with her, whether you're coming in for relaxation, therapeutic work, or lymphatic drainage specifically.

**How long have you been practicing, and what's your background or training?**

I graduated from massage therapy school in 2023. At the time, I was already operating a small local business in the beauty and aesthetics industry, so I wasn’t initially sure whether massage therapy was something I would pursue professionally.

As I continued working in aesthetics, I became particularly interested in lymphatic drainage and the benefits it could offer my clients. I saw firsthand how valuable lymphatic work could be, both aesthetically and from a wellness perspective, and I wanted to incorporate that knowledge into my practice.

That ultimately led me to pursue massage therapy more seriously. I completed my training, passed my licensing examination, and became a licensed massage therapist. Since then, I’ve continued developing my skills and have become especially passionate about lymphatic drainage and the broader connection between massage, wellness, and the body.

**What first drew you to massage therapy as a career?**

Honestly, like many things in my life, becoming a massage therapist was not something I originally planned. It was more of a series of opportunities where one thing led to another.

I was working in the beauty and aesthetics industry when I was presented with the opportunity to attend massage therapy school. I thought it would be a valuable skill to have and something that could complement the work I was already doing, so I decided to pursue it.

It wasn’t really until after I graduated that I realized how much I genuinely loved massage therapy. I found that I was much more drawn to the health and wellness side of the industry than I had been to beauty and aesthetics. Massage allowed me to work with people in a way that felt more meaningful to me, and over time, it became something I truly wanted to build my career around.

**Was there a moment, person, or experience that made you think, “This is what I’m meant to do?”**

There wasn’t one specific moment or person that made me feel like this was what I was meant to do. For me, it was much more gradual.

As I learned more about massage in school and began experiencing its benefits in my own life and seeing those benefits in other people, I became increasingly interested in the work. My interest in lymphatic drainage was especially influential because it connected directly to my background in aesthetics while also introducing me to a much deeper understanding of the body and overall wellness.

Over the past few years, that interest has continued to grow, and I’ve found myself becoming more passionate about the therapeutic side of massage and the ways it can support people physically and emotionally.

**What types of massage do you specialize in, and what do you enjoy most?**

I specialize in lymphatic drainage massage, but my general massage style is very different from my lymphatic technique.

For a traditional massage, my style is influenced by Swedish and spa-style techniques. I enjoy incorporating long, flowing effleurage strokes, traction, joint mobilization, and gentle jostling to create a treatment that feels both relaxing and therapeutic. I really enjoy creating a sense of flow throughout the session rather than having the massage feel overly mechanical.

Lymphatic drainage is much more specialized. When I perform lymphatic work, I use a very specific technique and extremely light pressure because the lymphatic system requires a completely different approach than traditional massage.

What I enjoy most is being able to tailor the experience to what each client needs. I love that massage gives me the opportunity to combine technical knowledge with a very intuitive, caring approach.

**What can a first-time client expect from a session with you?**

First and foremost, you can expect to be welcomed with a genuine smile. I’m always happy to see my clients, and I want people to feel comfortable and cared for from the moment they walk through the door.

For a traditional massage, clients can expect a relaxing, flowing style with long effleurage strokes, along with techniques such as traction and joint mobilization depending on what their body needs.

I also place a lot of importance on the energy I bring into the room. I have a very caring touch, and I believe that creating a calm, safe, and positive environment is an important part of the therapeutic experience.

My goal is for clients to feel that they can truly relax, let go, and be present in their bodies.

**What's your philosophy around massage and healing?**

I believe massage can play an important role in healing because the body and mind are deeply interconnected.

Of course, massage can help address physical tension, discomfort, and the effects of physical trauma, but I also believe there is an emotional component to the way we hold stress and tension in our bodies. Sometimes healing involves more than simply talking about what we’ve experienced. It can also involve learning how to release physical patterns of tension and reconnect with our bodies.

I’m particularly interested in the relationship between the nervous system, stress, and the body. I believe that creating space for the body to relax and release can be an important part of overall wellness.

I also come from an Indian background, and massage has always been a very natural part of my culture. Massage is often an expression of love, respect, and care within families. Children massage their grandparents’ feet as a sign of respect; parents massage their children; scalp massage is common; and caring for one another through touch is something that can be part of everyday life.

Because of that cultural background, I’ve always viewed therapeutic touch as something much deeper than simply a service. To me, it can be a way of caring for another person.

**Are you an outdoor enthusiast or more of an indoor homebody?**

I think I’m a little bit of both.

I grew up in Bellingham, and when I was younger, I had a lot of sensory sensitivities. I really disliked being wet, touching dirt, walking through leaves, and dealing with things like slugs and mud. Those sensory experiences actually kept me indoors quite a bit as a child.

As I got older, I began slowly exposing myself to those experiences, and something really interesting happened: I

[![CTA](https://no-cache.hubspot.com/cta/default/5769280/interactive-223855338792.png)](https://advancedsportschiropractic.com/hs/cta/wi/redirect?encryptedPayload=AVxigLKkSJjHXgMEKGCnJ61Zbcyu5OE%2FYn%2FPsxgiaWjSiwgpAJyFnCmyUgL3lPFZREVUlytLrtT4Pd6shhAWfCDccwYfkr8IuKfjSuQhsVPufKoDcRNFl6%2FfGVkQ31DEpKHmI0cLolpAOa5oDWa5rGr8%2BH5aMrU1U5jzidzatq6MOqXW5bk2Y6aN&webInteractiveContentId=223855338792&portalId=5769280)

discovered that I actually love being outside.

That evolution has become a meaningful part of my life. Over the past few years, I’ve become very passionate about gardening. I used to be uncomfortable even touching soil, and when I first started gardening, I would wear gloves because I didn’t like getting dirt under my fingernails. Now I genuinely love having my hands in the soil, working with roots, caring for plants, and getting my hands dirty.

It’s been a really rewarding experience to realize that something that once felt uncomfortable can eventually become something you genuinely enjoy.

**How does living in the Pacific Northwest factor into your life?**

Living in the Pacific Northwest has definitely been a journey for me.

When I was younger, I actually didn’t like it very much. The rain, wet leaves, sticks, mud, and all of the textures and sensory experiences that come with the Northwest were difficult for me. I spent a lot of my childhood wishing for a warmer, more tropical environment.

My family is from Fiji, so I think I naturally gravitated toward that tropical environment and everything that came with it.

But as I got older, I intentionally exposed myself to the things I had avoided, and my relationship with the Northwest completely changed. I learned to appreciate the beauty of the area, and now I can genuinely say that I like the rain—which is pretty impressive considering how much I used to dislike it.

I’ve come to really appreciate the greenery, the seasons, the trails, and the connection to nature that living here provides.

**What do you do to take care of yourself?**

My plants are a huge part of my self-care. I have a lot of them, and honestly, they take up quite a bit of my time, energy, and attention—but I love it. Caring for plants gives me something creative and nurturing to focus on.

I also love crafting. I’m the kind of person who will see something and think, “I could probably make that,” and then suddenly I have a new project. I enjoy making things simply because I find the creative process relaxing and rewarding.

Walking is another really important part of my routine. I love hiking and walking, and I’ve noticed that I’m at my best mentally when I’m moving every day. For me, walking is one of the simplest ways to clear my head, get outside, and reset.

For me, self-care is really about staying connected—to my body, my creativity, nature, and the things that make me feel grounded.

**Is there anything else you'd like potential clients to know about you before booking their first appointment?**

I want potential clients to know that I genuinely care about the experience they have with me.

I don’t believe massage should feel like a one-size-fits-all treatment. Everyone comes in with a different body, different experiences, and different needs, and I want to take the time to understand what each client is looking for.

I also think there is something really special about creating a space where someone can simply slow down for an hour and take care of themselves. Life can be overwhelming, and sometimes we need permission to stop, breathe, and reconnect with our bodies.

Whether someone is coming in for relaxation, therapeutic work, lymphatic drainage, or simply because they need a little time to themselves, my goal is for them to leave feeling cared for, comfortable, and a little more connected to themselves than when they arrived.
