Melynn’s Success Story
I have severe endometriosis and fibromyalgia. I came to Dr. Curtis in 2013 after 18 months of three major surgeries and several procedures. After my last laparoscopy where my left kidney was removed, I just wasn’t recovering well at all. The worst part was that I was getting exhausted after walking my dog about 50 feet. That pretty much killed me so I got nothing done the rest of the day. And I just couldn’t move my body very well. Also, my digestive system was miserable, I was getting bad cramps in my back, and when I woke up each morning, I could hardly move my head and neck because they were so stiff.
So I was a mess, but my surgeons and doctors just told me to exercise and give it time. Since they couldn’t help me anymore with recovery, and I was not recovering, I found Dr. Curtis online and arranged to see him and get evaluated. My back was so sore that the first time he put his hands on it I kicked him (involuntarily). And it took a good deal of wrenching to get anything to pop back into place. We began with 3 times a week, and I was definitely loosening up when my insurance decided I didn’t need anymore chiropractic help. A month of no chiropractic visits, and I was right back where I had started. So we decided to pay for my treatment ourselves (actually, the visits are significantly cheaper than what our regular doctor charges our insurance). We started with three times a week, then eventually, got me down to 2 times a week, then once a week, and I am now ready to try twice a month. This has only taken a few months, which I think is really impressive.
In the few months I have been seeing Dr. Curtis, I have gone from walking 50 feet and then going to bed for the rest of the day to walking two miles every day with my doggie, and then working hard the rest of the day just fine. Dr. Curtis was the first medical person to be able to pinpoint my digestive problem. He had me stop eating fresh fruits and vegetables for a while and just do V8s and juices. It worked wonders! My stamina returned and my back cramping disappeared. I discovered that my vitamin pill was also bothering me, so I switched to liquid vitamins. Finally, I am seeing the natural recovery that the surgeons expected my body to do automatically. It is entirely due to Dr. Curtis’s diligent work. Dr. Curtis also noticed that I was not engaging my core muscles, likely due to not being able to use them for 18 months as surgery incisions healed. He taught me exercises to isolate and strengthen them, and I am now able to practice using them during my day. I started doing neck stretches every morning (well, I was doing these before but they never seemed to make any difference) and my neck is not stiff and sore in the mornings anymore. And now, my back and hips and neck often pop back into place on their own during the week, and they respond pretty easily at my appointments, too.
Dr. Curtis has an awesome massage therapist, Shawna, who has magic fingers. I generally avoid massage because it hurts me so badly, but Shawna can really get in there without causing any pain. She also has experience in lymph work and abdominal massage/scar tissue disruption. She has done work on me and significantly improved my digestion and my incision scars.
We still have some work to do, as my neck and shoulders are still needing a boost, and my scar tissue around my organs will take some time to disrupt completely. But I am far more functional than I have been in years. My fibromyalgia doesn’t affect my stamina much anymore, and a good deal of my pain has disappeared from adjusting my diet so my organs aren’t overtaxed.
This was exactly the physical therapy that I needed after such a long and difficult series of surgeries and procedures. I am off all painkillers since seeing Dr. Curtis. My headaches (I was getting bad ones) are almost nonexistent now. I sleep well. I get up and function all day and don’t have to take 4-hour naps anymore (I actually don’t usually nap during the day at all, now). And I am back to sleeping at night without taking sleep medicine.
There is no question that I needed the surgeries I had in order to save my life and help my body. But I also needed Dr. Curtis’s work just as much, to help my body heal itself and be restored to normal activity and functionality. I don’t know why it never occurred to my surgeons and doctors that I might need physical therapy and chiropractic work after such a difficult 18 months. But I know now that my full recovery required it. I recommend that anyone who has had surgery or other medical issues come see Dr. Curtis as part of your recovery process. You will be amazed at the difference.
Thank you, Dr. Curtis. The surgeries saved my life, but your work gave me my life back.
